Air Handlers

Indianapolis, IN Air Handlers

Is your heat pump or air conditioning system struggling to deliver heated or cooled air efficiently across your entire home? In some cases, you may need to repair or replace your HVAC system. However, depending on the circumstances, your HVAC system might be functioning as it should, but it just isn’t doing the job you want it to at delivering efficient air across your entire home.

If this is the case, an air handler might be just what you need. Air handlers ensure your HVAC system is delivering even, powerful air across your home to maximize comfort levels. What Is an Air Handler, and How Does It Work?

An air handler, also referred to as an air handling unit, is connected to your home’s heating and cooling system and is responsible for regulating the air’s temperature before circulating the conditioned air throughout a home. The air handler is the indoor portion of your air conditioning or heat pump unit. It works in conjunction with the outdoor condenser unit. The two pieces of equipment are linked via refrigerant lines.

An air handler is box-shaped much like a furnace. It consists of a blower, an evaporator coil and the furnace filter. The air handler works with heat pumps and air conditioners to remove hot air from houses and circulate cool air with its blower.

Air handlers help improve indoor air quality by using its filter to trap harmful contaminants and pollutants and preventing them from re-entering your home’s living spaces.

Types of Air Handlers

There are different types of air handlers that can be installed in homes, including:

  • Single-speed. Single-speed air handlers are the most cost-effective option. As their name suggests, they work at only one speed, meaning they’re either 100% on or 100% off.
  • Two-speed. Two-speed units have a setting that’s lower than 100% to more evenly circulate cool or warm air across a home.
  • Variable-speed. Variable-speed air handlers can operate at a number of different speeds to meet whichever temperature requirements are needed. They also have the ability to adjust to different humidity levels to help improve indoor air quality.

Preventative Maintenance for Air Handlers

It’s important to ensure regular maintenance is performed on your air handler so it runs efficiently year-round. Maintenance can identify issues such as dirty air filters or evaporator coilers or a faulty blower motor, which can struggle to properly circulate air, leading to increased wear and tear and expensive repairs down the road.

Having annual maintenance performed on air handlers can help improve efficiency, increase comfort, reduce repairs, lower energy bills and increase the unit’s lifespan.
